Multiple Sclerosis Society names Sanford-Burnham’s Dr. Barbara Ranscht as Researcher of the Year

On March 24, more than 70 multiple sclerosis (MS) research advocates came to Sanford-Burnham in La Jolla, Calif., to learn how our labs are making advancements in the fight against the immune-mediated disease. The advocates visited the Institute as part of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s (NMSS) MS Awareness Month. National Academy of Inventors names two Sanford-Burnham researchers as Charter Fellows

Two Sanford-Burnham professors have been named Charter Fellows of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI): Erkki Ruoslahti, MD, PhD, distinguished professor and former president of Sanford-Burnham, and Kristiina Vuori, MD, Ph.D., current president of the Institute. Ruoslahti and Vuori are now part of a group of 414 NAI Fellows from more than 150 prestigious research universities, government, and nonprofit research institutions. Sanford-Burnham welcomes two new scientists to Lake Nona

We’re excited to announce that we have recruited two cardiometabolic experts to our Medical City campus in Lake Nona (Orlando), Fla. Peter A. Crawford, MD, PhD, and Andre d’Avignon, PhD, join our Cardiovascular Pathobiology Program from Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. The increasing density of local scientists and clinicians in Orlando is accelerating the growth of the region’s bio-medical industry, promoting both economic development and the quality of health care. Dr. Randal Kaufman, one of the world’s most influential scientific minds

Last week, Thomson Reuters published a list of the world’s most influential scientific minds—195 of them in biology and biochemistry to be exact. Thomson Reuters created the list based on scientists that write the most reports that rank among the top 1 percent cited by other scientists between the years 2002 and 2012. To no surprise from us at Sanford–Burnham, Randal Kaufman, PhD, professor and director of the Degenerative Disease Program, was on the list.
