SBP’s Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences is now accepting applications for fall 2016 admission to the PhD degree program in biomedical sciences.
Recently accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), the program prepares students for careers in basic and translational research through a unique curriculum of focused, multi-disciplinary instruction. Course of study and research focus are individually tailored, and students are directly admitted to a mentor’s lab with no rotations. Classroom and seminar instructions are accompanied by extensive practical laboratory training, all under the supervision of expert faculty.
We currently have more than 25 students studying in our collaborative research environment, with access to the most sophisticated minds and technologies in biomedical sciences.
“Admission standards are rigorous,” said Dr. Robert Rickert, Associate Dean & Chair of Admissions. “Students not only need to show high aptitude based upon academic performance and GREs, but also significant accomplishments in the laboratory with a focused interest, so that we may best match them with potential mentors.”
First year students take focused classes, elect a number of specialized tutorials with faculty, and begin thesis research. In the following years, students focus on laboratory research that leads to their doctoral dissertation.
Students select the program for a variety of reasons.“The caliber of faculty at SBP offers the perfect blend of passion and intellect to further drive my interests,” explains graduate student Marissa Sanchez, BS “I enjoy studying here because it is a collaborative environment where everyone is excited about helping people and finding cures. Knowing that my research could one day potentially help people who are fighting cancer is what continues to drive my passion for research.”
Graduate student Cameron Pernia, BS, enjoys the pace and ample resources, adding, “I wanted to obtain my PhD from accomplished faculty, where I could develop academically in a world-class scientific center, and at an institute that would prioritize training me to become a premier researcher in my field. SBP offered all of that, as well as the opportunity to finish my studies before my peers at fellow institutions. A great feature of SBP’s graduate school is its size, we have more faculty members than students, so I have easy access to mentors.”
As technologies and techniques in the field continue to rapidly evolve, SBP’s GSBS remains on the leading edge of innovation.
“With the recent accreditation of our program, there has never been a better time for aspiring young scientists to engage in the discovery of new principles of biomedical sciences,” shared Guy Salvesen, PhD, Dean of the Graduate School. “SBP’s Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences provides an outstanding environment to embark on this path.”
