Getting groovy for a good cause at Bring It!

From the moment guests stepped into the disco-lit room, it was clear Bring It! was not your typical fundraiser.

Donned in bell bottoms, sequined bodysuits and platformed heels, this year’s guests sampled hors d’oeuvre’s supplied by roller-blading servers and grooved to classics such as “Stayin’ Alive” and “Dancing Queen.”

The 70’s-themed event, held on May 2, 2019, at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, drew a crowd of more than 400 attendees—the largest yet—a testament to the hard work and dedication of co-chairs Juli Oh and Matt Browne, and Sarah and David Szekeres. John Weisbarth, host of Tiny House Nation and San Diego native, emceed the event for the third year in a row.

While fun was had by all, the night’s mission was never far from anyone’s mind: fundraising for our Institute’s work to find cures for diseases such as Alzheimer’s, cancer, heart disease, diabetes and more.

Co-chair Sarah Szekeres shared her personal story about why research is important to her: “Learning I have the BRCA2 gene mutation, which puts me at a greater risk of breast and ovarian cancer, has been an overwhelming and frightening experience for me and my family. It’s through basic research that we will develop effective medicines or tests that prevent, diagnose or treat disease—and create a future where my daughter, and her children and grandchildren, aren’t afraid of cancer or Alzheimer’s or the many serious diseases our society faces today.”

Guests vied for an opportunity to participate in onstage competitions—a spot so coveted it was raffled to the highest bidder. Top-scoring teams partook in absurdly hilarious games, such as “Hungry Hungry Human,” where guests attempted to collect plastic balls from an inflated pool while wheeled on a dolly; and “Rocky,” where participants furiously boxed and ran in place to reach the most steps on a pedometer. Despite wearing wigs and hats, contestants even braved a bobbing-for-apples style competition involving candy encased in a Jello Mold.

Altogether, Bring It! certainly puts the “fun” in “fundraising needs.” We hope to see you next year—stay tuned for more details about the date and theme of the event.

Medical Discoveries and Beyond was the space-age theme of this year’s Bring It! fundraising event held on April 19th at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. More than 300 Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute (SBP) supporters and guests donned Star Trek uniforms, Star Wars’ costumes, Conehead and cosmic Athena warrior outfits—all to raise money for biomedical research.

Co-chairs Juli Oh, Matt Browne, Sarah and David Szekeres were pleased that the event attracted so many people. “This event makes raising money fun and helps SBP reach a broad group of prospective supporters,” said Sarah.

In keeping with the cosmic theme, guests were served liquid nitrogen space popcorn, spuds in space and moon pies by waiters wearing lab coats.

SBP Board Chairman Hank Nordhoff enthusiastically welcomed “the next-generation of philanthropists” and reinforced SBP’s position as global leader in science. Nordhoff attended with his wife, Robin. Board member Alan Gleicher and his wife, Marleigh, also attended the event.

The uniquely SBP event had four rounds of space-themed trivia and six out-of-this-world stage challenges, including spooning Reese’s Pieces into an empty bowl without hands while wearing an E.T. headband; throwing cheese curls onto a team member’s shower-capped head covered in shaving cream; and launching space shuttle gliders into luminescent hula hoops.

There was also a raffle for an Honorary Padres for a Day package courtesy of SBP Board member and Padres co-owner Peter Seidler; a wine toss with exclusive wines donated by award-winning HALL Wines in Napa Valley; and the Fund-A-Need paddle raising.

Sponsors for the event included Alexandria Realty, Karen and Jeremy Anderson, BDO, CBRE, Cooley, Creative Fusion, Cushman & Wakefield, Danaher, Marleigh and Alan Gleicher, Jeanne Herberger, PhD, Heron Therapeutics, KPMG, Moon Valley Nurseries, Murfey Company, Josie and Jim Myers, Neurocrine Biosciences, NuVasive, Oxford Finance, San Diego Padres, Charles Patton, Pegasus Building Services, Reflow Medical, Retrophin, Square 1 Bank, Jonell and Gregory Tibbitts, Julie and Court Turner, Wells Fargo, and Willis Towers Watson.

John Weisbarth, host of Tiny House Nation, emceed the event for the second year in a row.

You brought it to Bring It!

Nearly 300 people joined SBP for a fabulous, fun-filled night at the “Bring It!” fundraiser at the Del Mar Fairgrounds on April 27, 2017.

With a “weird-science” 80s theme, guests came dressed in neon, Madonna outfits, characters from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Miami Vice, and the U.S. Olympic ice hockey team that won the gold against the Soviets in 1980.

In one of the most unique galas in the San Diego area, it was a night to remember. “It certainly was the most fun event ever,” said Juli Oh, one of the four committee co-chairs. Other Bring It! co-chairs included Matt Browne, Sarah and David Szekeres. Proceeds from the evening support groundbreaking biological research in cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, metabolic disorders, infectious and inflammatory diseases.

Guests also played Pac-Man, chowed down on poke in petri dishes, knocked back cryo mojitos, and ended on sweet notes such as mini cupcakes of the periodic table of elements and glow-in-the-dark cotton candy. They competed in heated trivia rounds and braved the stage for creative challenges, involving slinky belts, ping-pong balls, a kiddie pool and an explosive finale.

MC John Weisbarth hosted the event with a rad 80s cover band. SBP scientist Brooke Emerling talked about her research on breast and ovarian cancers and shared the story of how she is inspired to help a childhood friend, a 40-year-old single mom suffering from an aggressive form of breast cancer.

“SBP is a wonderful, wonderful nonprofit. If anyone actually wants to help patients, this is the place to start,” said David Szekeres.
