Expanding Leadership Program - Sanford Burnham Prebys

March – June 2024

This leadership program is open to alumni of Foundations of Leadership. In this program participants will expand their understanding of the concepts introduced in Foundations of Leadership through self-analysis, peer-feedback, and case studies. In addition, participants will analyze their current leadership behaviors against three key aspects of the leadership process, and how they lead teams. Throughout the program participants will continually add to their own draft of leadership standards towards developing a clear vision of the leadership climate they want to create for their current and/or future teams.

Program Overview

What Makes the Program Unique?

  1. Aligned with the “Foundations of Leadership” program, the cornerstone of “Expanding Leadership” continues with the theme that there is no single right way to lead, and that daily choices and behaviors are what ultimately establishes your reputation as a leader.
  2. While we expose you to new theories and frameworks through which you can evaluate your leadership development, rather than provide you with a prescriptive checklist of items against which you will continue to measure yourself as a leader, YOU will create your own roadmap of leadership competencies and aligned behaviors; this will allow you to assess how well your behaviors and choices align with YOUR goals.
  3. “Expanding Leadership” continues with the cohort model to support your continued professional development in a committed and like-minded group of peers while also growing your professional network. You will have an opportunity to connect with alumni from your “Foundations in Leadership” cohort as well as individuals from other cohorts in the last five years.

Program Timeline

Module 1: Taking the Leap! Your Commitment to Leadership

Friday, March 1, 2024

More Info In Module 1 program participants will review some of the basic concepts they learned in the Foundations program, examining how they have implemented the material and how their self-awareness and behaviors have shifted. Additionally, participants will be introduced to three basic stages of the leadership process. The module will conclude with participants identifying their level of commitment to choosing behaviors that are aligned with their intentions.

Module 2: The Leadership Process

Thursday, March 28, 2024

More Info In Module 2 participants will explore the leadership process in depth including the drivers of each stage of the process and the behavioral continua along which one’s leadership style can be measured. Through self-reflection and reference to the results of an assessment taken prior to this module, participants will gain insight into how their inherent priorities manifest in their leadership style. The knowledge and insight gained from this module will help participants as they transition their thinking from their individual interactions with others to how their daily behaviors and ways of working impact their current or will impact their future teams. Finally, participants will start to consider the type of environment they want to create for their teams and the standards to which they will ask their teams to adhere.

Module 3: Creating a Climate of Achievement

Thursday, April 25, 2024

More Info In Module 3 participants will shift their focus from themselves to their teams, while still considering their role as a leader in shaping the environment their teams experience. Participants will learn about Climate and use a self-assessment of the Climate created by their own leader to understand the impact of behaviors on team members’ experiences. This module will provide participants with an opportunity to self-examine the type of Climate they may be creating for their own current or future teams, and how their current behavioral tendencies are/will impact their team’s experience and their likelihood of achieving the results they desire as a leader.

Module 4: Leading a Team to Success

Thursday, May 23, 2024

More Info In Module 4 participants will analyze case studies in leadership. Through readings and videos participants will have an opportunity to observe the leadership of others and discuss the choices the leaders of interest made, the impact they had on others/their teams, and what they might have done differently depending on their desired impact. Further, participants will continue their work with and understanding of the Leadership Process towards planning and implementing their personal leadership goals. By the end of this module participants will have a head start in creating a plan for themselves towards developing and refining their leadership behaviors to be in alignment with their goals.

Module 5: Program Finale

Thursday, June 27, 2024

More Info In Module 5 participants will work with an assigned program group to develop a leadership case study and analysis that they will present to and facilitate discussion among the rest of the cohort. The program will wrap up with a cohort activity designed to underscore some of the concepts discussed throughout the program.
