There are different types of heart defects, all of which interfere with efficiently pumping blood through the body. Even minor, often unnoticed defects can result in increased risk for arrhythmia or heart failure. The first step in identifying genetic defects typically is by genome sequencing, which is routinely and applied at hospitals throughout the country. While it delivers many genetic variants, they often give little insight into a potential disease mechanism. To overcome this problem, we are establishing atSanford Burnham Prebys a prototype for the analysis of heart development and function to ultimately guide personalized therapeutics.
