The event, scheduled for April 27-29, aims to foster greater diversity in biomedical research and shine a spotlight on the next generation of scientific leaders.

As part of their ongoing effort to educate and train the innovators of tomorrow, Sanford Burnham Prebys is inviting early-career researchers from underrepresented groups in the biomedical sciences to apply for the first-ever Rising Stars Symposium. Selected Rising Stars will be invited all-expenses-paid to the institute to present their research, network and learn more about postdoctoral opportunities. The deadline to apply is February 15.

“Training the next generation of researchers is among the Institute’s top priorities,” says Kristiina Vuori, MD PhD, President of Sanford Burnham Prebys. “It’s also critically important to make the effort to reach early-career researchers who have been historically marginalized in the sciences. This Symposium combines the best of both of these initiatives.”

The event is being organized by Sanford Burnham Prebys’ Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
(DEI) Recruiting Committee, who strive to help the institute maintain an inclusive workplace and use recruiting strategies that are equitable and result in increased representation for underrepresented groups.

“We are thrilled to be taking a targeted and innovative approach to recruiting postdoctoral researchers from underrepresented groups to our Institute” says Angelica Rocha, PhD, who leads the DEI Council that includes the Recruiting Committee. “And, we will not stop at recruitment. We are taking a comprehensive approach to DEI that includes fostering an inclusive, equitable environment even after we welcome new employees through our doors.”

Interested candidates should submit an online application, upload a CV, and provide contact information of a mentor that can serve as a reference.
