The human body is a constant cacophony of communications, with an estimated 28-36 trillion cells representing 1,200 groups transmitting and receiving signals from each other and with myriad more microbes.
How cells talk to themselves, to one another or not at all profoundly affects the course of their existence and the greater wellbeing of the organism. Many diseases are caused or exacerbated by defects in signaling pathways, whether it’s loss of signal, a signal that doesn’t reach its target, a signal ignored or too much signal.
Such is the basis for targeted therapies in which drugs are designed and developed to specifically affect a key signaling pathway, either by blocking it or boosting it.
